I met Fiona in 1982 when we started our nurse training. Fiona seemed quiet at first but it wasnt long before her hilarious side revealed itself. Four of us; Fiona, Rebecca Schofiled Singer, Sheron Marley and I developed a close friendship and our own silly humour from which many ridiculous catchphrases started to emerge. Nobody else would understand them but they kept us in stitches for 40 years.
Fiona, Becky and I shared a flat in Ramsgate, above my grandparents, from our 3rd year of training. There was much partying and pubbing. One of my most enduring memories is of us bouncing around on our cheap 3 piece suite to the Sultans of Swing, shouting that we were never growing up.
Fiona and I studied like maniacs for our final exams, usually in the kitchen with the oven door open because we had no heating. If it wasnt for her, Im sure I would not have been so focused. Never enjoyed studying so much. we opened our results letters with my grandma and grandad.
Over the years, we’ve remained great friends. Becky and Fiona have been a great double act for 40 years. I’ve been less present but whenever the three of us have reunited, its been as though we’ve never been apart. I was lucky to have both of them at my wedding last year. Fiona looked so well and so hopeful for the future, that its hard to believe that not even a year later she has gone.
She is woven into the fabric of my life. She was beautiful, funny and kind, and I’m so grateful that she was my friend. Sleep well Pet. See you soon xx
